Curtain Placement: Do’s and Don’ts

Curtains can complete the look of a room. The placement of a curtain can highly effect the looks and visual impact of a room. Quality is what we seek. Most homeowners value lighting and fixtures because they make a room look functionally pleasing, but often overlook the necessity of including curtains into their interior design. Window coverings or curtains provide privacy, frame a beautiful view, dilute outdoor light, provide insulation, and protect your favorite décor from the sun if they are installed correctly.

Curtains can soften a room’s appearance, provide the idea of higher ceilings, create a focal point, and widen the width of a wall. However, if they are not properly fitted, they can have the opposite effect. Make sure you know how to hang your window coverings correctly before you begin. Here’s how to hang curtains like an interior designer, as well as how to avoid a few common blunders from the Interior designer in Salem-LeFreddo.

Benefits of adding curtain to your home

  1. Curtains add beauty to a space: There are a plethora of lovely curtain styles to pick from. Curtains may be hung to bring your interior design fantasies to life, whether you want to add soft textures to an otherwise ultra-modern flat or compliment the classic vibe of your lovely rural hamlet. They can be hung to tie a clashing color scheme together or to make a statement in an understated environment. They can be produced in brilliant, dramatic colors or in delicate pastels for a more understated aesthetic. They can be used alone or in combination with blinds to give you the best of both worlds. The options are endless!
  2. Curtains add privacy to a space: Another great advantage of hanging drapes and curtains in your home is that they provide a lot of solitude. We all require privacy from time to time, and being able to close your curtains is a simple and effective approach to isolate oneself from the outside world! Closing your curtains can help you create the sensation of seclusion you require, whether you’re watching a movie with your family or having a pampering evening with your friends.
  3. Curtains control light flow: One of the most crucial qualities to consider while shopping for window furniture is light control. Whether you want to adorn your home with thick, sumptuous curtains or trendy blinds, it’s important to think about how effective they are at letting in or blocking out natural light. After all, that’s what window treatments are supposed to accomplish!
  4. Curtains block noise: Hanging curtains will filter some of the noise coming in from the outside, similar to how carpeting can mute the sounds of people walking about your property. It’s crucial to remember that curtains won’t block out all noise, but fabric, especially thick fabric, does have noise-blocking properties that can help you sleep better at night!
  5. Curtains require very less maintenance: Dusting your curtains on a regular basis should suffice, but you may also steam clean them or gently wipe them down with a moist cloth to remove any scuffs or blemishes. This shouldn’t take more than a few minutes and won’t require you to incorporate it into your daily routine, so you won’t have to worry about spending hours on curtain maintenance!

A few do’s and Don’ts to help you with placing the curtains in right position

DO’S

  • Do position your rod approximately 4’’-6” above the window ( or go all the way to the ceiling) Fix your curtain rod closer to the ceiling than the top of your window if you can, as the higher the curtain rod, the taller the window will appear. They should be 4-6 inches above the window frame, according to one rule of thumb.
  • Do get a rod that is wide enough so the curtains don’t cover up the window when they are pulled back. Use this strategy to make the curtains a uniform width and give the appearance of larger windows. – On each side of the window, the usual distance from the window casing to the end of the curtain rod (excluding finials) should be four to ten inches. Because curtains are typically left open during the day, ensure that the curtain rod extends at least four inches on each side of the windows inside frame. Extend the rod up to 10 inches beyond the window’s frame to give the illusion of a larger window.
  • Do use curtains that reach the floor. In most case curtains should be long enough to reach the floor. The longer the curtains are, with a few exceptions, the more trendy and attractive they will appear. As a result, most conventional ready-made curtains are quite long. Although it depends on elements such as window length, curtains look best when they reach the floor. What you want to achieve will, however, be determined by how low you want your curtains to hang. In actuality, curtain lengths vary depending on the decorating style. Some designs require that the curtains touch the floor, while others do not.

DON’TS

  • Don’t put the curtain rod directly above the window frame. This is true for small areas that feel claustrophobic and uninviting. It’s best not to hang the curtain rod just above the window frame in a small room to provide the sense of extra ceiling height. The location of the curtains will only make the room feel smaller and confined.
  • Don’t use a narrow rod that forces your curtain to cover up some of the window. Position the rod 8-12 inches wider than the window frame so that the curtains only cover the window frame’s edge when open. This accomplishes three goals: more light enters the room, the window appears larger, and your curtains hang nicely without being crushed to the side.
  • Don’t use curtains that are too short. Small curtains make the room appear short, stubby, and uncomfortable. The length of the wall was reduced, making the window and the room appear smaller. Curtains that reach the floor should be used. Curtains should be 1/2″ off the ground, kiss the ground, or pool on the ground. I recommend normal 96″ drapes for 8′ ceilings, which you can adjust up and down or hem at the bottom if necessary.
